A ransomware attack in September 2024 on multiple medical institutions in Lubbock and El Paso, Texas, compromised the data of over 1.4 million patients. The affected entities include Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Lubbock (650,000 patients), TTUHSC El Paso (815,000), and University Medical Center (UMC) in Lubbock (501).
The attack caused major IT outages across campuses and clinics, disrupting patient care and access to medical systems. By late October, most systems were restored, and by late November, all three institutions confirmed patient data breaches involving names, addresses, Social Security numbers, health records, and more.
Patients have been notified and offered credit monitoring. The attack is part of a broader trend, with 14.8 million patients affected by 74 healthcare data breaches in Texas over the past two years.
